Life Cycle Cost Calculation for Investment Decision in Manufacturing

The growing global competition is pushing for product lifecycle reduction, so that manufacturing system lifetime becomes much longer than the product lifecycle and, hence, flexibility is a strict necessity. Product and production system lifecycle co-design is hence a necessity for effective investments and, consequently, to make manufacturing attractive. To this aim, this paper presents a Life Cycle Cost (LCC) calculation model and software tool that supports a decision maker in investing in the proper production system for a given production task. This is obtained by integrating expected demand scenarios into a LCC engine that allows to explore different technological solutions and, hence, to design the right degree of flexibility to invest in under lifecycle consideration.
